It shows up every June. Same field. Same rides. Same fortune teller in the glass booth who deals cards that are never wrong. The carnival runs for fourteen nights. On the fifteenth morning, the field is empty. No trucks. No tire tracks. Just dead grass and the smell of burnt sugar. They're hiring for the ring toss. The pay is cash. The Seasonal Worker Guide says not to eat the food, not to visit Zara after dark, and not to count the workers. The number changes. The carousel has more horses every year.
